Srinivas and Ranitha Gorantala run a homemade sweet shop in Melbourne’s Hoppers Crossing.

Originally from the state of Telangana in southern India, the couple will spend Diwali celebrating with their children over crackers and Diwali lights.

Sri says sharing sweets on Diwali is a way of showing that you care about your loved ones; it also reminds you of the importance of the festival.

One of their most popular sweets is laddu, which are small balls made from chana dal (besan) flour, sugar syrup, cardamom and other flavours, which Sri describes as an “easy [sweet], that in our family background, everyone knows how to make”.

When Sri and Ranitha first moved to Australia in 2006, they couldn’t find ariselu anywhere, and missed the sweet their mothers and grandmothers used to make for them every Diwali. So, they started making it in their store. “This is a completely traditional sweet made with jaggery [a kind of cane sugar] and rice flour,” Sri says. “Overnight we soak the rice and in the morning we blend it, mix it with the jaggery, make a dough and deep fry it.”
